Compare heat pump quotes by scope, sizing and verification

Two heat pump proposals can differ in equipment and in work that is less visible: duct repair, electrical changes, commissioning and follow-up. Compare what each contractor will actually deliver before comparing totals.

Normalize the proposed problem and load

Give bidders the same description of comfort problems, equipment history and household goals. Request the sizing method and calculation assumptions for each proposal. ENERGY STAR advises a thorough home evaluation and warns that bigger equipment is not automatically better. A quote that lacks a load basis should be clarified before it is ranked.

Record exact equipment and installation work

List outdoor and indoor model numbers, rated performance, ducted or ductless configuration, controls, backup heat, electrical work, refrigerant line work and removal of old equipment. If ducts are used, ask whether leakage, insulation and airflow are assessed. An apparently cheaper quote may leave significant work out.

Compare protections and proof of completion

Ask for permits and inspections where required, warranty coverage, labor terms, maintenance requirements, completion schedule and the tests the installer will perform. ENERGY STAR recommends written itemized estimates and model numbers. Ask who will resolve a room that remains uncomfortable after installation and how that outcome will be measured.

Check incentives separately and close the decision

Any utility or government incentive depends on place, date, equipment eligibility and program rules. Verify it directly with the current program and do not deduct an unconfirmed amount from a bid. Compare the net written scope, not an advertised monthly saving. This page does not endorse a contractor or predict a payback period.

  • Same household brief given to each bidder.
  • Load calculation and assumptions available.
  • Exact models and included work itemized.
  • Duct and electrical scope resolved.
  • Warranty, permits and commissioning stated.
  • Any incentive checked at its current source.
